从历年考研英语试题看，阅读文章所涉及的题材都是上世纪90年代以后世界范围内的热门话题。这些文章往往以美英等西方国家的事情为例，以美国的事情为例的比较多，如，the Net， the biomedical research and animal rights， Merger and Acquisition， Medical care， how to use humor effectively， robotics， the Impact of oil price rise on economy， physician－assisted suicide等等。文章多为学术类的说明文或议论文，这些文章通常为报纸、杂志上的评论性文章或研究报告，一般观点鲜明。同时，有些词汇在这类文章中重复率较高，如， research center， survey， project，university， report， findings，等等。提醒大家关注有关下面话题的文章：世界安全的新观念（New concept about world safety）、恐怖主义可能是世界和平和安全的新的威胁、世界的健康问题（World health）、人和自然要和谐相处、商业诚信（Honesty in business）。
大处着眼整体阅读
一、快速找到文章所涉及到的主题及其主题句
这在文章的开始部分一般能够找到。比如，我们读了这一句： Wild Bill Donovan would have loved the Internet．（2003年考研阅读第一篇文章第一句）就知道本文和互联网有关。见到In recent years， railroads have been combining with each other， merging in to supersystems， causing heightened concerns about monopoly．（2003年考研阅读第三篇文章第一句）就知道本文的主题是，人们对近些年铁路系统的合并可能导致垄断现象感到担忧。找到了主题，我们就可以对文章的大致内容进行预测。一般情况下，第一段中就会出现主题句。比如， These days the Net， which has already re－made such everyday pastimes as buying books and sending mail， is reshaping Donovan’ s vocation as well．本句就是2003年考研英语阅读理解试题中的第一篇文章的主题句，大意是“互联网不仅改变了人们的日常生活，而且改变了间谍的职业”，它位于第一段的结束处。
第二段的第一句为： The latest revolution isn’ t simply a matter of gentlemen reading other gentlemen’ s e －mail．从该句可知本段要讲互联网对间谍职业的影响深度。
第三段的第一句为： Among the firms making the biggest splash in this new world is Straitford，Inc．， a private intelligence －analysis firm based in Austin， Texas．从该句可知本段的主要内容应该是介绍这个提供情报服务的公司。
第四段的第一句为： Straitford president George Friedman says he sees the online world as a kind of mutually reinforcing tool for both information collection and distribution， a spymaster’ s dream．从该句我们能够推知本段的主要内容为Straitford公司的运作情况。第五段的情形和第四段的相类似。
